Johnston County Child Restraint Diversion Program

Did you get a ticket for a child passenger safety violation?
  • Child not in rear seat
  • Child not in appropriate seat
  • Child not restrained

In partnership with the District Attorney's office, Safe Kids Johnston County offers a Child Restraint Diversion program to any caregiver who received a citation for a child passenger safety violation.  We are unable to provide this program for tickets that are more than 1 year old.

What do you need to do?
  • Contact the Program Coordinator to request appointment at least 2 weeks before court date.
  • Be prepared to allow at least 30 minutes to one hour for your appointment.
  • Bring the following to your appointment : your child, your child's car seat, your photo id, and a copy of your ticket.  You can obtain a copy of your ticket at the District Attorney's office.
  • If the child you received the ticket for is not your child: you will still need to have the child present at the appointment.  If necessary make arrangements for the parent to attend the appointment with you.

At the appointment, a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician will
  • talk with you about CPS laws,
  • weigh & measure your child,
  • check your child's car seat to make sure it is the right seat for your child,
  • make sure the seat is not on recall and not expired,
  • teach you on how to properly install your child's seat into the car,
  • teach you how to properly secure your child in their seat and make adjustments to the seat as needed.
  • For older children, we will talk with the child about the importance of wearing their seat belt the correct way.
    • This may include crash test videos with the parent's permission.
